In planetary gear systems the most important source of vibrations is the parametric excitation due to the periodically time-varying mesh stiffness of each sun-planet and ring-planet gear, as the number of tooth pairs in contact changes during gear rotation. This parametric excitation causes severe vibrations when a harmonic component is in vicinity of the natural frequencies (or their linear combinations). The complex dynamics of a single-stage planetary gear system with time varying mesh stiffness and backlash is simulated using a dynamic model with three equally spaced planets. A bifurcation analysis is performed to explore the dynamic scenario (periodic, quasiperiodic and chaotic), with a special attention to symmetry breaking phenomena that are extremely interesting in planetary gears as they can cause additional imbalance-induced-stresses. Symmetry breaking in the dynamical systems may occurs in the case of chaotic response and the planetary gearbox under investigation, which is perfectly balanced for each position, can suffer of a big dynamic imbalance when chaotic regimes take place, such imbalance gives rise to alternate and unexpected high loads on bearings.

The purpose of this book is to investigate the effect of a varying moment on the rotation angle of a large tethered satellite that is orbiting a planet. Two different types of orbits were investigated: a simple circular orbit and an elliptical orbit. Cases with zero and non-zero initial angular rotation velocity were investigated as well. This investigation will assist satellite docking missions. The large rigid tethered satellite is a futuristic concept, and this investigation is meant to assist possible docking missions to the satellite. To simplify the problem, the rotation is constrained to the orbital plane.
Predictability of stock returns has always been of great interest to both financial practitioners and academics. This book provides an extensive review of empirical literature on the return predictability as well as the debates about the implications to orthodox market-efficiency theory. The book also involves an empirical research of the predictability using a dataset of Australian industrial stocks. The book starts with an examination of time-varying systematic risks of Australian Industrial portfolios. Further, a Bayesian dynamic-forecasting model is employed to examine the explanatory power of economic and financial information publicly available. In the out-of-sample analysis, a maximally predicted portfolio (MPP) is constructed and market timing and industry rotation strategies are adopted to test the profitability. The results presented are of particular interest to investment and academic community especially those with a focus of risk management and industry analysis.
